MIRINJANI NURSING HOME, CAROL MAILER WING

NAMATJIRA DRIVE, WESTON ACT, 2010

The project began with the client’s intention to acquire the clear site next door to the existing nursing home in order to expand upon current facilities. Energy Efficient heating, cooling and lighting together with a range of water-saving measures and environmentally conscious selections of materials were key initiatives of the project. The new extension doubles occupancy numbers with zero increase in electrical power capacity supplied to the enlarged site. This is made possible by the use of well insulated high thermal mass construction as well as the replacement of electrical heating with gas fired hydronic heating. “...it has improved the needs of our staff, contractors, visitors and most importantly our residents...” - Uniting Care Ageing Project Manager The Facility Includes: - A link between the new upper floor and existing facility - A large enclosed Courtyard featuring dementia specific gardens for daylighting and solar gain - 64 Resident Bedrooms and Ensuites - 4 Lounge Room, Dining and Kitchen facilities - Visitors rooms - Staff Wing

TAYLOR PRIMARY SCHOOL

KAMBAH ACT, 2013

Following the closure of Taylor Primary School in 2012, the ACT Education and Training Directorate invested $13.0m to rectify, refurbish and renew the school, including a new early childhood centre. The collaboration of Small Quinton Coleman Architects and The Peppermint Room created a vibrant, modern educational environment that combined opportunity for the latest pedagogy and reflections of the natural attributes of nearby Mount Taylor. Enhancements and expansion to the original school included; refurbishment of the building envelope and a new entrance; new 64 place early childhood centre, Pre-School; new landscape, external shade and playground structures and other internal improvements. The schools picturesque backdrop and relationship to the natural environment formed the inspiration for the design of the school with three key elements; the mountains, trees and the new life developing. The use of colour created a playful environment for the children and also brought the building back to life, giving it a fresh new appearance.
